Our Story

Hello!

I'm Jana - a keen knitter, yarn dyer and spinner from Kotka, Finland. I was born in Latvia, but Finland has been my home for more than fifteen years. Yarns and knitting has been my passion since early childhood. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was just five years old. In summertime we also dyed yarn together using the materials from her garden. Inspired by my passion for fibres, I founded Kettu Yarns and Lankakaappi.

I'm glad you found my little online store! Welcome and come on in!
We offer a carefully selected collection of yarns, needles and knitting accessories. I always try to find the best products and I only sell what I love. I especially appreciate the handmade products created by small family-run businesses.

THE STORY OF THE YARN CABINET

IT ALL BEGAN IN 2017...

...when I opened my yarn studio and an online store. I wanted to share my love for color with the world.

The name of the shop comes from the lovely antique cabinet, where I store all my beloved yarns.
Lanka means Yarn in Finnish, and Kaappi is Cabinet.

SHOP AND DYE STUDIO

In 2019, I had a unique opportunity to set up my own yarn dyeing studio in this atmospheric 100-year-old brick building. In the past, our little red brick house has functioned as a laundromat, a carpenter's workshop, and even a bakery. I saw the building for rent and knew in my heart that it would be the perfect home for my yarns. In March of 2019 the shop opened its doors.

DYER'S EVERYDAY LIFE

I was already in my 30s, when I discovered that yarn dyeing is my true passion. It combines the artistic freedom with the precision elements and structure, which makes my mathematical brain very happy. I enjoy playing with colors and fibers and often let the imagination fly into completely new direction. I am eager to try new ideas and strive to create something surprising and inspiring. Neon shades hold a special place in my heart.

In my work I use professional acid dyes and quality materials. Sometimes in the summer months I also enjoy playing with natural dyes. Over the years I have perfected my dyeing process and I ensure that it is safe for the environment.

I want to share with you my passion for colors and bring a bit of joy to everyday life.

Warmest greetings,

Jana from the Yarn Cabinet
